“Modern English friend from Old English freond, from freon, to love.” Learn something new everyday.
Can’t remember the book or author but do recall someone arguing that the love between friends is the purest kind because it rests not on obligation but simple mutual respect and affection. Elsewhere in the same book (p.2) Coetzee writes: “Affection may not be love, but it is at least its cousin.”
